PROFILE

Emile Shemilt BFA, MA (Oxon), MSc

Emile Shemilt (born Winchester, England in 1980) is an artist and academic. He lives and works in Dundee, Scotland.

Emile works predominantly in the media of expanded cinema, digital video installation, photography and sculpture. 

Emile studied at The Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art, University of Oxford, from 1999 to 2002.  In 2003 he was awarded the Arts and Humanities Research Board Scholarship to study for the Master of Science in Electronic Imaging at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, University of Dundee.  Since graduating from Duncan of Jordanstone in 2005, Emile has been employed as a Research Assistant for REWIND | artists’ video in the 70s & 80s.

REWIND is a research project based in the based at the Visual Research Centre in Dundee Contemporary Arts. It is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and involves the documentation and conservation of significant artists’ videos that define this important era in British Video Art.

In September 2006, Emile comenced a doctorate study at the school of Media Arts and Imaging, Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, titled MATERIAL CINEMA AND THE CINEMATIC FIGURE.
